Overview of how CO2Benchmark is different from the CDP

The Carbon Disclosure Project has achieved a phenomenal track record in getting companies to disclose their actions and position relative to climate change. It is currently the most important green NGO in the world.

The CDP sent out its first carbon data request to corporations in 2003, and 235 companies responded. CDP 2010 is currently receiving carbon data from nearly 3,000 companies in more than 60 countries.

Often companies answer the CDP questionnaires by using information already disclosed in their own publications (CSR reports, annual reports etc...). The table below shows how are different from the CDP:

Companies

CO2Benchmark's doesn't limit itself to companies responding to questionnaires. The team of analysts pro-actively researches any publication put out by companies in the world to uncover emissions or energy data.

We cover many privately held companies (>1000) and this greatly contributes to the sample size per sector and therefor the relevancy of the sector benchmarks we create.

Information

CO2Benchmark is focused on hard data and results achieved by companies. We provide pointers to qualitative discussions provided by the companies.

We cover energy consumption, carbon emissions, carbon credits and waste data.

Free Services

In 2010, the Carbon Disclosure Project has changed how anyone can access to the responses to their questionnaires. Members of the general public will find it difficult to regularly compare how 2 companies perform like-for-like.

In contrast, CO2Benchmark offers two essential tools to benchmark companies:

  • Who's Greener? a simple selection of two companies yields the carbon efficiencies (in terms of Ton CO2 per Turnover), Energy consumption and waste data. For qualitative information, we invite anyone to look up the CSR Reports on the company websites.
  • Sector Benchmarking tool: select any sector from a list of 80 and our database will display 5 companies  for free, whereby the benchmarking takes into account discrepancies of carbon emissions of grid electricity between countries. This service requires users to register for free.

Both services are featured on the right.

Frequency CO2Benchmark updates its data throughout the year - each day. We are not bound to an annual questionnaire cycle. Whenever a company publishes new information, we capture it.
Accuracy

CO2Benchmark has a thorough quality process that includes dozens of automated checks using the latest sector benchmarks.

Those who respond to the CDP questionnaires are responsible for their entries and there's no accuracy check beyond the point of data entry.

Service

At any point of time, customers can contact us to discuss the data offered: we can help interpret it, verify it etc...

Aggregation

The CDP limits itself to the contents answered to their questionnaires.

We analyse reports published by companies and aggregate information from multiple sources:

- EU ETS log

- CDM projects

- EU / UN statistics (energy, carbon efficiencies)

- US TRI (pollutants)
